Like most people who are internet and tech savvy enough, I too use utorrent as my bittorrent client.   It is by far the best alternative to when Azeurus(now Vuze) used to be as a simple bittorrent client, with the customizability for the users wants and expects.  After awhile Azeurus changed.   Well the same is happening to uTorrent.  However not as bad as other bittorrent clients have been, uTorrent still lets its savvy users disable the advertising methods.  Those who pay for a Premium uTorrent/membership. Those users get advertising disabled, because they helped the development by paying into it.

The rest of us we see, ads.   I hate ads, and for a long time I kept updating my uTorrent client allowing for the ads to be displayed for my support of their program.  Recently I say a dating ad, and next thing I know, I see other ads that absolutely should not be on my personal machine.  Windows 8 introduced a form of Ads into the OS, we don’t need our Application Developers to do the same.   (Make too much money by broadening their ad base).

I went skimming the Internet and I came across this article from LifeHacker.com “How to Disable Ads in uTorrent”

To turn off ads and offers, open Options > Preferences > Advanced. Here you’ll find a large list of flags for the app and a filter box. Search for and disable the following flags:

  • offers.left_rail_offer_enabled/left_rail_offer
  • gui.show_plus_upsell
  • offers.sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled/sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled
  • bt.enable_pulse
  • gui.show_notorrents_node
  • offers.content_offer_autoexec

These flags may be named slightly differently depending on which version of the app you’re using. Be careful when editing things if you’re not entirely sure what they do.

Worked perfectly, if you are savvy enough to catch onto these flags as to what they do.  Understanding why to change their settings from True to False, shows how clear it is to know the advance things that go on within your computer.  At time of this post I’m running various versions of uTorrent on various OS machines.  Thus far, all my Free uTorrent clients show no ads.
